Sun Maxilink Prime: 3 Easy Steps to Secure Your Future

Sun Maxilink Prime

Latest Update: January 8, 2022

Sun Maxilink Prime is a VUL plan from Sun Life, payable for at least ten (10) years. It has the combined benefits of life insurance protection and an investment component that helps your money grow over time. Making it the best-selling VUL plan of Sun Life.

You might be wondering why the VUL plans are the popular choice of many regarding life insurance.

So here’s a simple explanation of why and how VUL works and how it could potentially answer your financial needs.

The Stoplight Mechanism: Start, Stop, and Wait

Sun Maxilink Prime Stoplight Mechanism

25 yr old male, non-smoker, investment in Index Fund with an average historical return of 10%, but it is not guaranteed as past performance will not indicate future results. Guaranteed life coverage is Php 700k with a waiver, ADDD, CIB, and HIB.

As a financial advisor, meeting someone who does not know about investing is common. But the worst part is meeting an existing VUL policyholder who doesn’t know how it works.

Simply a heartbreaking moment for every financial advisor. So please don’t get any plan unless you understand it well.

That’s why I devised a simple yet effective way of explaining it to my clients, and I call it the“stoplight mechanism.”

A VUL policy composes of 3 easy-to-follow steps anyone can remember when securing their future. Parang stoplight lang kasi yan, kailangan mo lang mag-start, stop, at wait. Madali lang ‘di ba?

The Stoplight Mechanism
1. Start as early as possible.
2. Stop after completing the paying period.
3. Wait until you reach your goal.

Sun Maxilink Prime 02

Sample premium is for males, and non-smokers, life coverage of Php 700,000 with total disability benefit, accidental death, dismemberment and disablement benefit of Php 350,000, critical illness benefit of Php 1 Million, and hospital income benefit of Php 1,500.

STEP 1: START as Early as Possible

As you know, VUL is a combination of life insurance and investment. The cost of life insurance is highly driven by age, making it expensive as you get older.

If you get a VUL plan today, you can save more money than getting it in the future.

Life Insurance

The image above is an example of three guys who purchased a VUL plan like Sun Maxilink Prime at different ages. They have the same insurance coverage.

You will notice that the premium increases with age, and the difference increases as they get older.

The premium for a 25 yr old male is only Php 25,310.50 per year or just Php 2,109.21 per month. Ang mura lang ‘di ba?

You saved Php 4,951.5 compared to a 35 yr old male and a whopping Php 21,256 per year compared to someone who gets it at a later age of 45.

Sun Maxilink Prime is a ten (10) years to pay VUL plan from Sun Life. So the discount you get after ten (10) years is Php 49,515 and Php 212,560, respectively. Tama, mas malaki ang matitipid kung kukuha ng mas maaga.

Investment

There are three (3) factors for investing: time, money, and interest. You need at least one of them to make your investments grow.

If your goal is to retire at age 65, then a 25-year-old guy has 40 years from retirement, 30 years for the 35-year-old, and 20 years away if he’s already 45-year-old.

Can you guess who has the most retirement fund?

Yes, it’s the 25 years old guy because he has more time to let his money compound.

Teka, Ton ano ba yung compounding?

Compound interest is the interest calculated on the initial principal and the accumulated interest of previous periods of a deposit.

STEP 2: STOP After Completing the Paying Period

After the paying period, you will have an option to stop paying the premiums, but if you want to speed up the accumulation of funds, then you can add more money from time to time.

If your policy is Sun Maxilink Prime, you can stop paying it after ten (10) years.

Because of the manageable payment scheme, it also gives a sense of accomplishment to the policyholder once done.

Imagine the feeling you get when your kids (or future kids or siblings) finish schooling. It gives you motivation and confidence that what you’re doing is right.

Sun Maxilink Prime 04

The projected fund value is based on the average historical return of the Index Fund at 10%, past performance is not a guarantee of the future performance of the fund.

STEP 3: WAIT Until You Reached Your Goal

This part is the most confusing for my clients and other existing policyholders.

Most of them thought that after the paying period, assumes that they pull out their money with hefty returns, but that’s wrong.

Investing is like growing a tree. It grows by adding water (premiums), fertilizer (high-interest financial instrument), and time.

Yes, it needs time, and it’s the most important among the rest.

You won’t get a tree by planting a seed and leaving it overnight. The same goes for your investments. You can’t expect them to double in just a couple of years.

Note that the best friend of compounding is time. It needs time to compound.

Do not get too excited yet. It is only the start of your beautiful journey toward financial freedom.

What is Sun Maxilink Prime?

Sun Maxilink Prime

Sun Maxilink Prime is a ten (10) year pay VUL plan from Sun Life. It has a combined benefit of life insurance protection and an investment component. It aims to provide you with financial security and peace of mind while you grow your funds over time.

Sample Proposal of Sun Maxilink Prime

I will share with you the proposal I made for myself. As a millennial, I want my plan to be affordable but can still provide me with enough life insurance coverage and a good retirement fund at age 65.

Federico Suan, Jr.| 25 yrs old | Male | non-smoker

START at age 25 and pay Php 25,310.50/yr or just Php 2,109.21 per month for ten (10) years.
STOP paying the premiums at age 35 with a total accumulated fund value of Php 231,017.
WAIT until age 65 to have Php 3,891,872 worth of retirement fund.

So here are the benefits of Sun Maxilink Prime.

Insurance Benefits of Sun Maxilink Prime

Life Insurance

My family will get a lump sum of Php 700,000 if I die early due to an accident, illness, or natural cause. This amount can help them proceed with their life even after my sudden demise. Hopefully, my brothers will use this amount to finance the needs of my Lola and younger sister.

Total Disability Benefit (TDB)

I also attached a waiver of premium (Total Disability Benefit or TDB) that will waive my future payments if I get disabled and can no longer work. It is as if I am still paying the plan when I get disabled.

Accidental Death, Dismemberment, and Disablement Benefit (ADDD)

Accidental death, dismemberment, and disablement benefit (ADDD) give me a financial assurance that my family will get Php 350,000 on top of the life insurance coverage of Php 700,000 if I die due to an accident. If I lose a part of my body in an accident, I will receive up to Php350,000. When I become totally and permanently disabled, Sun Life will give me up to Php 35,000 per year.

Critical Illness Benefit (CIB)

Critical Illness Benefit or CIB is a rider I attached to my plan to give me Php 1 Million when I get diagnosed or treated for any of the 36 critical illnesses. It includes stroke, heart attack, invasive cancer, etc. This lump sum can help me with my finances, so I can get the treatments I need and not be a burden to my family.

Hospital Income Benefit (HIB)

My plan has Hospital Income Benefit or HIB. I will receive Php 1,500 per day if confined in a hospital for up to 1,000 days of confinement. It doubles to Php 3,000 when I get admitted to ICU or confined due to any of the following dreaded diseases: acute heart attack, chronic liver disease, dissecting aortic aneurysm, end-stage lung disease, end-stage renal disease, invasive cancer, major organ transplant, multiple sclerosis, poliomyelitis, progressive muscular atrophy, and stroke.

Sun Maxilink Prime Investment Growth

Investment Growth of Sun Maxilink Prime

Upon retirement, at age 65, the projected fund value is Php 3,891,872, which makes me a millionaire retiree (yippee!).

If I decide to retire earlier, at age 55, I will have Php 1,508,909, which I can use to start up a small business.

Hopefully, my business venture will become a success.

I can also use the fund value for my kids’ education or buy a house or a nice car.

Thus, I can use the fund for whatever purpose that is important to me.

Isn’t that great?

Frequently Asked Questions:

Are smokers allowed to avail of this plan?

Yes, but you will have to pay more compared to a non-smoker.

Do I need to undergo a medical examination?

Medication examination is for applicants with pre-existing health conditions; age can also be a factor.

Can I avail of ADDD without the TDB?

No, Total Disability Benefit (TDB) is requisite in getting an ADDD. You can get TDB without ADDD but not the other way around.

Is my insurance coverage guaranteed?

Insurance is the only guaranteed amount in the policy. It will not be affected by any fluctuations in your investment fund or any partial withdrawal.

Is my projected fund value guaranteed?

The investment component and chosen fund are connected. It is directly affected by any fluctuation in unit price. Thus, it is not guaranteed because the actual fund value can be higher or lower than the projections.

Am I required to pay after 10 years?

You may still be required to pay again if the fund value is no longer sufficient to pay for the charges. If you have CIB and HIB, you must pay until age 70 and 60, respectively.

Will I be allowed to withdraw money from my fund value?

Partial withdrawal is allowed, and corresponding charges may still apply. Life coverage will remain in force for as long as the fund value left is enough to shoulder the insurance charges.

What happens to my policy if I get all the funds?

The entire withdrawal of the fund value is almost the same as surrendering it to Sun Life. Consequently, life insurance coverage also ceases.

Pwede po ba mag advance payment para di naman umabot ng 10 years? hindi po ba yun mapupunta sa policy fund value if ever?

    • Yes, you can advance your payment. But it’s not recommended as you might be losing opportunity to average out. Unless, you saw an opportunity then why not.

    • Hi JB. It’s hard to say which one is better without taking other factors into the equation. Answering it will take a lot of comment space that may not be beneficial for other readers. If you need assistance with this, please feel free to connect with me on Facebook. Thanks 🙂

Hi Sir! Ano difference ng Maxilink Bright and Maxilink Prime? Bukod sa premium paying period nila? Mas mahal ba yung Bright? Thanks!

    • Hi Juls. They are both VUL plans. In terms of premiums, for the same insurance benefits, Sun Maxilink Bright will be priced more than a Sun Maxilink Prime. The reason behind it is that when the paying period is shortened, while all the benefits remain the same, premiums will be compressed into higher amounts. Unlike the other, wherein premiums are spread over a longer span of time.

Actually, there are several distinctions between the two. If you need further assistance on this just feel free to connect with me on FB. Thanks 🙂

    Hi, Sir!
Do we still have to pay for the riders like HIB monthly after 10 years or the fund value will take care of it? Thanks!

    • Hi Paula. Ideally, it’s best to pay for the HIB. After 10 years, it is only a very minimal amount, and you have the option to pay it even in monthly mode. But you may also do a premium holiday after 10 years. When you do this, make sure that there are enough excess premiums and top-ups done within 10 years.

You may message me on FB so I can explain this more with you 🙂

Hi Sir Federico, good day! May I know how is the insurance being paid?

  • Kat Alvarez Link Reply

Hi Federico. Nagstart po ako ng Sun Maxilink Prime noong 22 years old ako year 2012. So maliit lang po ang magiging total ng cashvalue ko after 10 years. Yung nababanggit niyo po na charges when I stop paying premiums, may chance po ba talaga na maubos nalang yung cash value ko para mainsure hanggang 88 years old. Kasi 56 years remaining pa po after 10 years of payment.

    • Hi Kat. I do not have an idea of what’s included in your plan. If you don’t have any medical-related benefits included then stopping after 10 years can be an option. As you can see on the projection of fund value even if your chosen fund performs poorly at 4% it will still cover you until age 88. But there is no assurance that you will not be required to pay again for your plan. Given that you may do partial withdrawal in between or the fund performs worse than 4%. But again, this shouldn’t be a problem if the plan was properly made. You can talk more of this with your agent. Or you may send me an email so we can discuss this more. Thanks 🙂

However, there is a plan covering a maternity benefit called Sun Maiden Plus. You may talk with your advisor about it but just in case he is not available you know where to contact me. Thanks 🙂

    • Hi Aina. Kung nasa abroad ka na medyo di na siya posible. Pero kung yan palang ang life insurance ‘wag mo na yan i-cancel kasi maaganda na covered ka na while working overseas.

Yung FA mo ba merong mutual fund license? Kung meron naman sa kanya ka na din kumuha at least kilala mo na at naka pag build na din kayo ng relationship. Pero kung di pa siya licensed then that’s the time na pwede mo nang i-consider kumuha sa ibang advisor. Salamat 🙂

    Hi Federico,

    Good day!

I’m paying my Sun Maxilink Prime regularly, but, within the grace period since the time I started. My concern is, will it cause any effect to my plan?

Thank you so much for the reply 🙂

    • Hi Ms. Myla. Yes, it will have an indirect effect on your investment fund. Delaying your payments means you might be losing some investment opportunity for your money to grow. So if you are paying it monthly then you may consider paying it annually to lessen the chances of missed payments. Thanks 🙂

  • Janet Pangilinan Link Reply

Hello Federico, for the Maxilink prime, you mentioned that premium charges will continue even after paying for 10yrs, what are these charges, how much are they, are these the monthly charges on the policy? So there’s a tendency that the fund value will be emptied when I retire?

    • Hi Janey. Your question is really a good one. To answer your question, these charges are explicitly expressed on each of the proposals. Just like how premium varies due to age, smoking habits, medical conditions, etc. charges are just the same. The tendency of your fund to become zeroed out will also depend on how it was formed as a plan being presented to you. This can get too technical so I suggest that you should meet an advisor to have it explained to you in details.

I am here to help you, just in case you don’t have an advisor yet. Thanks 🙂

        Good day Federico,

This is exactly the same thoughts I have on my mind right now. Started my maxilink prime April 2018, faceamount of 400k with ADB of 400k based from my online details (not sure if I understood it right). My advisor already quit Sunlife so I dont have first hand experience with the new advisor assign to me. After 10 years I want my fund value to keep on gaining but I’m afraid it will be zeroed out to compensate the premium charges of I stop on paying. So my question is, how much will be the premium charges after 10 years?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

        All the best – Bien

        • Hi Bien! You may ask your new advisor about it. The thing is, charges are not constant; they vary. The one who can honestly answer that specific question will be your advisor because he’ll have access to your account. What I can answer is, in insurance, charges are always there for as long as the plan is active, regardless of whether it’s VUL, term, or whole life plan.

The thing with a VUL plan is you get to see the charges. Btw, this plan is designed to provide insurance protection until age 88 at 4% p.a.

If I’m lucky to survive the accident but lost any part of my body, I’m entitled to receive up to Php 350,000. When I become totally and permanently disabled Sun Life will give me up to Php 350,000.

Meaning 350k + 700k ang total na makukuha?

    • Hi Andrew. Yes, you are correct. If you have ADDD coverage and died due to an accident then your loved ones (beneficiaries) can get a total of Php 1.05M plus whatever the investment fund during the time of your demise. Thank you 🙂

Hi Federico. I just want to clear something from your “Stoplight Mechanism”. For example, after paying the 10-year payment period of Sun MaxiLink Prime, you are suggesting not to withdraw the fund value for it grow, right? Pero diba if you stop paying na, ang magbabayad na nung insurance is yung fund value mo?

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Hi Zenon. After paying the plan, the insurance charges will still be there and is being deducted from the fund value. A plan like this is programmed to give you insurance protection until age 88 even when you stopped paying after 10 years. Provided that your fund value will not be emptied out or if you attached medical related benefits. You also have an option to continue paying for these charges and by doing that it will provide you more funds to use in the future.

The plan is really flexible and best explained in person. Thru financial planning, we can assess your needs and financial goals to come up with a recommendation fitted to you. Thanks

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Hi Riza. Don’t cancel your plan because it may do more harm than good. My question is did your FA included an excess premium in your plan? If he does then good, this can help you in the future if you decided to do a premium holiday. If it doesn’t have then pay your plan in excess. For example, you have a 60k per annum plan then you may pay it to let’s say 100k. This additional 40k will go straight to your investment fund that will make it sustainable (somehow) after paying your plan for 10 years or 15 years. I hope you’ll continue the plan. Thanks!

  • Rio Cantillo Link Reply

Hi Federico! Do I need to undergo a medical examination prior to getting the insurance?

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Hi Rio. It will depend on a lot of factors so I can’t say that they will require it to you or not. Some are only required for it to prove their insurability as we all know many (as in many) would like to avail life insurance when they are already sick. This is not the main purpose of insurance and if allowed, companies will, of course, suffer great loss. If you are still healthy and have a healthy family background then less likely you will be required for medical tests. Thanks!

You can do withdrawals just like what you’ve mentioned and can still be insured at the same time. The insurance coverage is guaranteed and is not affected by any partial withdrawals made. Thanks!

Halimbawa Federico, tapos na po yung 10yrs na pag babayad ng premium. Ano po yung insurance charges na dapat pang bayaran?

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Hi Anna. Need bayaran yung critical illness and hospital income benefit pero pwede naman mag premium holiday just ask your financial advisor about it. Kung wala ka pang plan. We can get in touch. Thanks!

Hi Federico! 😀

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Hi Sheila. Tama, pwede mo siyang kuhanin as lumpsum pero surrendered na yung policy or pwedeng magwithdraw ka na lang ng amount na need mo para buhay pa din yung policy. Anyways, thanks for dropping by 🙂

Hi Federico. I am thinking of “downgrading” my policy.. I am currently unemployed and unable to pay my quarterly premium. Is this possible? I still want to have something for the future.

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Hi Lili. Yes, pwedeng magdowngrade ng policy just ask your FA for assistance. Keep in mind na lang na you can do downgrade but you can’t upgrade it again in the future. Thanks!

What if i fail to pay within 10 years, what happen to my plan?

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Hi Ms. Marilie. You don’t have to worry for as long as the fund value of your account is sufficient to pay the insurance charges. The only time it will become a problem is when the fund value becomes zero for it will be in 30 days grace period. If you really think you can’t continue the plan anymore, you have an option of surrendering the plan to Sun Life in exchange for the surrender value of the plan. I hope this helps thanks!

Hi Federico. Ask lang po ako. Meron na ko Sun Maxilink Prime but I want to add benefits like HIB and CIB. Mag additional payment pa ko? Thank you so much. Sobrang laking tulong ng blog mo 🙂

    • Federico Suan, Jr. Link Reply

Thanks for visiting my blog Eloiza. CIB and HIB are riders (additional benefits) that you can attach to your plan which require additional premium. I strongly suggest that you avail these as we all know how much the cost of healthcare in our country, right? So the additional cost won’t come close to the financial security it offers.

You may also talk with your FA so he can assist you with this. Have a great day 🙂

Hi Sir Federico. Magkaiba po ba ang ADD at ADB?

      • Hi Anne. Magkaiba sila. Yung ADB is Accidental Death coverage lang yung ADDD includes dismemberment and disablement. If kaya, choose ADDD. Thanks 🙂
